South Australian Oaks
The Adelaide Autumn Carnival is the most anticipated and exciting event on the South Australian thoroughbred racing calendar. Taking part throughout March and May each year at the prestigious Morphettville Racecourse, the South Australia Jockey Club (SAJC) hosts a terrific range of Group races to entertain and delight the thousands of spectators and eager bettors ready to get in on the action. The Adelaide carnival consists of around seven elite race days including the South Australia Oaks day in April. Featuring two great Group 3 races, the showcase event of the day is the South Australian Oaks.
One of the longer distanced races of the carnival alongside the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) and the Adelaide Cup (3200m), the South Australian Oaks is raced over 2,400 metres; it is the longest race solely for fillies at the carnival. Contested by fillies at least three years old under set weight conditions, the race has $100,000 in prize money up for grabs; and there are similarly lucrative prize pools available for the lucky, successful punters!

Many fine fillies who have just competed in the high status Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) the week before may continue their campaigns with a run in the South Australian Oaks, testing their staying abilities at this increased distance race. Bettors who see the most wins are those who study the form of the contenders in lead-up races like the Australasian Oaks and spot the dominating fillies. This Australasian/South Australian Oaks double is also a popular bet type with punters that pays some terrific dividends if you can pick the filly to win both events. The last competitor to take out this double was Irish Darling in 2005.
After competing in the South Australian Oaks, fillies may be aimed at the premier Morphettville May race, the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m). The South Australian Derby held a fortnight after the Oaks is a similar distanced race at 2,500 metres that often attracts the same quality female stayers hoping to win the $300 000 stakes up against a field with colts and geldings as well.
Online bookmakers offer their full range of exciting wagers on the South Australian Oaks, so get in on the action next Adelaide Racing Carnival and see if you can select the winning filly; there is some great money to be made if you can!
